MARKETING & PUBLIC RELATIONS
This concept, fundamentally ask of contemporary organisations, whether they are designed for profit or not or to understand the importance of satisfying customer needs within a competitive arena. Over the last decade, marketing has come to be accepted as the management process considered as the 'engine' that drives strategic thinking which eventually leads to the enforcement tactical success.
Public Relations, on the other hand, complements the aggressive nature of marketing as it focuses on the needs of all stakeholders, selflessly driven to ensure the protection and enhancement of the image of the organisation and its various interests. Public Relations is a promotional subset of the wider marketing principle and once employed honestly and effectively, will ensure that marketing satisfies customers' needs while creating economic survival. Therefore, the disciplines of marketing and public relations are linked together, providing natural intellectual blends that continue to excite the modern business scholar.
The Cipriani College of Labour and Co-operative Studies introduced Marketing and Public Relations in the academic year 1997/1998 in an effort to provide stakeholders with an opportunity to improve their skills in the areas of relationship building, customer satisfaction and delivery value.
The Public Relations programme has two levels, the Certificate and the Diploma. The Diploma builds on the students understanding of public relations and explores the exciting world of advertising within a public relations context as well as studies marketing communications tools that PR Practitioners may employ to achieve success. The Diploma also takes a critical look at the law and ethics of the media, crisis management as it relates to the media and takes events management to yet another level. This Diploma prepares the graduate to perform at a junior management level in an Advertising Agency, an Image Consultancy firm or an Events Management company. The Public Relations programmes were re-designed for the academic year 2002/2003 after consultation with stakeholders and in an effort to provide programmes that are tailored to the 'world of work'. Recent research findings have led this department to the development of some new programmes formulated to match the needs of a changing business environment. Once granted approval by the Programme and Approval Recognition Committee (PARC), the College will in the next academic year introduce an Associate Degree in Marketing and Public Relations, and a Diploma in Marketing. This is evidence that the academic department of Marketing/Public Relations and by extension the College, remains focused on improving the educational landscape of Trinidad and Tobago.
